Stohlquist Cruiser Kayaking Lifejacket Review
I tried on a variety of life jackets before I decided on the Stohlquist Cruiser Kayaking Lifejacket. I have been using it for a year now and am very pleased with it.
It's important when kayaking to have a life jacket specifically designed for the type of kayaking you are doing. Imagine if you were in a dangerous situation had had to quickly use your paddle to deftly avoid some rocks. If your life jacket interfered with your arm motion, you could be done for. This Stohlquist Cruiser lifejacket is specifically made for sit-on-top kayaks, it's made specifically for a woman's shape, and it works exactly like it should.
I use a Venus 11 kayak from Ocean Kayak, so it is a sit-on-top kayak meant for women. I have the black seat insert that goes with that kayak. I haven't had any problems at all with my life jacket, in any situation. The lifejacket is secure on me, fits well, and has ample adjustment straps to keep it snug on all sides. I am 5'7" and 130 pounds, for a frame of reference. Whether I'm relaxing and taking pictures, paddling furiously against a heavy current, or anything in between, I can move easily.
I'll note that one time my boyfriend decided to "adjust" my life jacket straps for me, and when he did that the life jacket rubbed against my neck. So certainly if you are enthusiastic about your adjustments you could cause it to press on you. But I fixed that fairly quickly :).
There are pockets on the front of the life jacket, but I don't use them. I'm sure they'd be convenient for someone who wanted to carry something small with them. I just put my keys into the kayak's dry well. My camera is waterproof and on a float, so that stays in the kayak with me.
I chose the bright yellow color. If I go out of my kayak, my number one priority is that someone can find me. So I want that color to be as bright and glowing as humanly possible.
Well recommended for women who use sit-on-top kayaks. Feel free to ask me any questions.
UPDATE: Someone asked me how easy it was to swim with this on. My response:
Just for you, I went swimming in it today! I paddled my kayak over to the edge of the town beach and then leapt out of the kayak. The people on shore were vastly amused :). I swam all around the kayak. I could do back stroke, side stroke, the crawl, and it was quite fine. Of course, getting back INTO the kayak was a little less easy :).
