Sutton Cemeteries
Pidgeon Hill Cemetery

The cemetery is located off of Mendon Road in the Town of Sutton, County of Worcester, Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Directions from Sutton Town Offices (Intersection of Uxbridge and Boston Roads)

Go southwest 1/2 a mile on Boston Road toward Putnam Hill Road, turn left onto Putnam Hill Road. After almost 1 1/2 miles, turn left onto Mendon road. Continue east on Mendon Road for 4/10ths of a mile. Turn right up small black-gated driveway. Be careful of the severe transition between the road and the driveway - you WILL "bottom out".

This cemetery is located on the top of a hill in a very tranquil meadow-like setting. Overall, it is in good condition, as it has been a town-owned cemetery since around 1912, and it is fairly well taken-care of. I was disappointed at some of the damage to the stones that has been obviously caused by careless mowing; I was taken aback to find that a few fallen / broken stones had actually been MOVED to the surrounding stone wall to facilitate mowing - who knows where these markers actually came from? Sadly, on one of these - it simply says "MARY".

The cemetery itself is roughly rectangular - the North and South walls being about 170' front to back, and the West wall around 180'. The East wall (the front) is about 190' in length. There is a newer section surrounded by a chain-link fence, containing around 20 graves, to the North of the old section. This transcription doesn't include these. I hope to do a more in-depth survey of Pidgeon Hill Cemetery in the future, taking more accurate measurements, and describing each marker in much more detail. I also want to go back a double-check my work; I want to make sure I didn't miss any markers in the old section and to record the new section.

We divided the old cemetery into three sections - the northern part as section 1, middle as 2, and the southern part as section 3. These divisions correspond with the breaks in the eastern (front) stone wall. Within the sections, we numbered the markers (NOT the person buried,) in each row from north to south, working row by row, to the back (West wall) of the cemetery. There are approximately 250 markers here; some are missing and / or broken, making them impossible to read. Here, I've used one line each for each line on the markers. I've also used square brackets [ ] on my own comments - they are NOT on the markers. Other than capitalization, I've tried to be as accurate as possible with spelling and punctuation.

We treated the cemetery with the utmost respect and care; we left everything exactly as found and did not use anything other than a mirror (to cast shadows across the face of the stones) and our eyes to record these inscriptions.
