Broad Faced Sac Spider
The Broad Faced Sac Spider is Trachelas tranquillus - I like to think of this as the "tranquil spider". It apparently only comes into homes in the fall when it is preparing to hibernate. Indeed, the first time we ever saw this tranquil spider was in September when the leaves were starting to turn!
This is in the Corrinnidae family of "Antmimics and Ground Sac Spiders".
There seem to be two styles to the tranquil spider. One style looks very much like other sac spicers, but their tail end is pale, where most sac spiders have darker tail ends. Their middle is dark, where most sac spiders have a lighter middle. So it looks like a "reverse" sac spider to us.
This first set of images is of that style of tranquil spider. This is a male.
These following images are of a different tranquil spider, taken on October 26, 2009 in our home. This is a different style which has a matte grey abdomen and a darker thorax.
These images were of one taken in June 2013. It was on our porch. Maybe it was heading out from its hibernation.
