Freeswimming Tiny Tadpoles

Tadpoles are tiny and cute when they first emerge from their eggs! They begin their new lives with gills on the side of their heads. This stage doesn't last long, though. Fairly soon their gills have atrophied and they have developed internal gills. At this stage they look like little minnow fish.

Freeswimming Tiny Tadpoles They aren't fish, of course. They're amphibians. And the disappearance of those gills is an important first step in their path to become land-dwelling creatures. Just look at this little cutie. Barely out of the egg and he's already got a tiny mouth, a tiny pair of eyes, and a thin little tail to propel him around his new world.

At this stage you should be feeding him daily. He has only a tiny stomach and it empties quickly! Make sure there's fresh romaine and spinach available for him to nibble on. Follow the feeding instructions I provide to make sure it's cooked, chopped up, and frozen so that it's easy for him to eat and digest.

The water temperature, pH, and day-night cycle are all important for the tadpole to grow and bulk up. Depending on the type of tadpole you have, and the environment they're in, they can spend several weeks to several months in this stage. Treasure it while you have it. It goes by all too quickly!

Little tadpoles don't need rocks yet to climb up onto - but it's good to set up a tank to prepare for the future. Here's an example of a tank that is good both for little tadpoles and for their larger froglet versions. The multicolored hidey-hole gives them somewhere to hide in. The shallow part of the rock provides somewhere to bask.

This stage of a tadpole's life begins when it leaves its egg home, and it ends when the tadpole first begins making a pair of little leg buds, which will grow into the hind legs.
