Southeastern Indians and Tadpoles
There are many fun stories and myths involving tadpoles. This one comes to us from the Southeastern Indian tribes.
In a quiet corner of a placid pond, a tadpole was basking in the sun when a crawfish swam along.
The crawfish was in a surly mood, and he grumpily said, "Hey, you big belly! Why are you so fat?"
The tadpole was shaken out of his serene moment and turned on the crawfish. "Big belly? Oh yeah, well, why do you have such small legs?"
The crawfish's eyes widened in fury. "Small legs?"
The tadpole wasn't done yet. "And, by the way, the only reason I have a round belly is because my grandmother gave me some of her favorite watermelons as a special treat."
The crawfish wriggled unhappily. "Bah, you had a charmed life. The reason my legs are so tiny is because my grandmother used to tie my legs up when I was little. How dare you make me remember that!" He launched himself at the tadpole, and the two wrestled wildly.
A snail was watching all of this from the store, and when the melee began he raced off as quickly as he could to find help. He stretched himself out at full length, yelling, "Help! Help! Tadpole and crawfish are fighting!"
When snail reached his greatest distance out of his shell, crow swooped down from above, plucked him out, and flew off with his prize.
