Velvet Mites - Bugs and Beetles in Sutton Massachusetts
Wow, velvet mites - tiny pink bugs - are SMALL. I'm not just talking small, like a mosquito. I'm talking like 1mm in size so you can barely see a tiny speck of dust moving across your arm. You can't see any details with your eyes. It takes a macro lens to see what is going on here.
Every time I hung our hummingbird feeder outside in the morning, I would feel itchy when I came back in. I'd look at my arms and see nothing. Finally when I really stared at them I realized there was a tiny movement. A tiny freckle - the smallest speck - was moving. It's just amazing how small these creatures are.
The ones you see in these photos are the larger ones. There are even smaller ones that aren't showing up here. These critters are in the Trombidiidae family and are arachnids, down in the mites / ticks Acari subclass. They attack insects and spiders.
In the first photo there's one on my fingernail. I had my camera on a tripod and in macro mode, and even so the tiny things are hard to focus on.
