Giant Eastern Crane Fly

The giant eastern crane fly is, as you might guess, fairly large. This one was larger than an oreo cookie. We found it in our kitchen in September. It is Pedicia albivitta. It has a body like a dragonfly with white, brown, and black ridges. The wings look like a dragonfly's but instead of a transparent grid pattern they have more of a stained glass design with brown eye-like openings against a clear background.

The legs, instead of being thin and close like a dragonfly's, are spread apart and more like a water walking insect. They are supposed to have six legs. This giant eastern crane fly was injured and only had five legs. Not only that but it had gotten its back two feet tangled in a dust ball.

After I took a few photos I carefully detangled it from the dust ball. At that point it merrily flew up into the air and was off on its way.

This giant eastern crane fly is a female. You can tell because the end of its abdomen is pointy.
