Jun 29, 1999 Sutton Xtra-Mart Killing

One of the most noteworthy events to happen in Sutton in the past years was the June 29, 1999 killing which happend at the Xtra-Mart on Route 146 in Sutton, Massachusetts.

The man slain was James McCormick, the 45 year old store clerk. Mr. Mccormick was beaten savagely, then shot, then beaten further. The robbers took less than $100 as their take from the cash drawer.

The five men convivcted of this killing were apparently all friends who went to Doherty High School in Worcester. The person who pulled the trigger, Alexander Rodrigues, 19, was sentenced to second degree murder, life in prison with possibility of parole in 15 years. The getaway driver was Jeffrey Lassey, 17, who was sentenced in 2000 to 10-12 years in state prison. This would have him out of prison in the 2010-2012 timeframe.

Other participants were Isaac Lugudde, 18; Andrew Dwamena, 19; and Richard Salmon, 18.

Further research found that Rodriguez, Lassey, and Dwamena had used a gun to take money from a Texaco in Worcester only three days before this incident.
