White Birch

The White Birch - or Betula papyrifera - is a specific type of birch tree with paper-thin white bark. There are also many Brown Barked Birch Trees. Both brown bark and white bark types of birch trees are found in Sutton. The white birch tree is far less common here, though.

The leaves of a white birch tree are almost oval in shape, with very small little teeth running along the edges. The very tip of a birch leaf can narrow slightly.

The bark of the white birch tree was used by native Americans to make their canoes out of. They would also use this to layer on the outside of their wigwams (homes) to keep out the wind and rain. In Girl Scouts they teach us to take small amounts of white birch bark to use as a fire starter for campfires.
