Red Maple Tree Bark

There are times - especially in the winter - when you are trying to figure out what type of tree something is, and all you can really see is its bark. Luckily, red maples give you substantial clues as to their identity.

The bark of a older Red Maple is very rough with deep ridges. Here is a Red maple tree with several of its off-shoots trimmed off so you can see the inner workings.

Here's another image of a mature red maple tree's bark.

Younger red maples have a smoother bark.

When maple trees are very young their stems are a red color. Some people think red maple baby plants look like poison ivy because they have red stems. This is NOT poison ivy :) These are small trees.
