Sutton Massachusetts

Sac Spider

This is a Sac spider - a member of the Clubionidae family. They are slightly smaller than a dime, have a reddish body with relatively thin legs. Their back end is slightly lighter / browner in color with dark brown stripe like markings.

There are only two types of Clubionidae in Massachusetts. One is the Clubiona genus, and the second is the Elaver genus. This spider shown below is the Elaver genus of spider. They have distinct markings on their back. BugGuide says that the clubiona in comparison has a deeper groove on its carapace.

They are harmless and generally friendly and slow. We find them hanging out on our walls occasionally.

This first Elaver was found in a basement in Sutton MA. Technically it was found in an Avon box that was down there :)
