Pirate Spider
Pirate spiders are very cool! The Pirate Spider family - Mimetidae - is one of the major classifications of spiders, but then there are only three genus categories found in the US. The one we have here is of the Mimetus genus. Apparently pirate spiders jump into an existing web, eat the spider that lives there, and takes over its territory! Hence its name "pirate". When we first saw this one, we thought it was a normal cobweb spider. It looks pretty similar. However, it has strange markings below its head. The "collar" shape. This seems to be an indication of a pirate spider! Also it has three bright white - almost glowing - marks on its main body.
