Orb Weaver Crucifera Spider
Orb Weaver spiders, or the Araneidae family, come in a variety of shapes and styles. some are colorful and pretty. Others are dark and almost scary looking. The Neoscona crucifera species is quite lovely. It has a mediuim brown body with a lighter brown cross shape on its back. The "head" of the cross is against its head, while the bottom of the cross is against its bottom.
The legs of the Neoscona crucifera are striped. They have alternating areas of pale tan, dark brown, and some orange brown rust areas as well.
Orb weaver spiders are the ones that make the large, circular bulls-eye / spiral style of webs.
This orb weaver was photographed in late August 2013, in the bush outside our front door. The web was large, probably two feet across, and a traditional circular shape. The spider was fairly large - perhaps the size of a quarter.
We previously had one almost exactly two years previously. This poor spider is missing two of its legs. Again, this was by our front door, in a gorgeous, large spiral web.
