Hentzia Jumping Spider

Hentzia Jumping spiders are member of the jumping Salticidae family and the Dendryphantinae subfamily. They are found all over the US as well as Puerto Rico and other islands. There are 21 different species in the world, but only four in the US. Of those, only two can be found in Sutton - Hentzia palmarum and Hentzia mitrata. These photos are of the Hentzia mitrata, as it has pale front legs.

We have seen the hentzia jumping spider many times on our back porch over the years. It is very small, less than an inch across. Even so, it is very easy to distinguish because it is VERY jumpy! Every time we have tried to take photos of it, it has waved its little legs at us to warn us away, and then began leaping at the camera lens. It got to be a game, if we could take a photo quickly enough before it made its leap. It is definitely the jumpiest of the spiders we have encountered around here.

In several of the photos you can see the web coming out of its tail end.

For people who are confused that this is all the same spider, here is a movie of it. You can see its various "looks" during the video as well as the fact that it jumps. I have updated the movie so instead of having to download the .MOV file, you can now watch it on YouTube!

I have even more photos!
