Daddy Long Legs Spider
This photo gallery is for the Harvestman version of the daddy long legs spider.
There are no separate pieces. Just one body, eight long legs, and two little "mouth parts" by the face for eating.
Here are some more photos of this same daddy long legs, taken in late September. The daddy long legs seemed very sleepy in the sun!
We have had a "pet" Daddy Long Legs for several months in the fall of 2010. He lived in the window garden of our kitchen window. He just showed up one day and settled in. We call him "Cinco" because he only has five legs. He wanders from the basil to the cactus and back again. We even made him a little plant bridge so he can move around more easily. We feed him little bits of bread occasionally but generally he is self sufficient. We worry about him when we don't see him for a day, but he always comes back to his little garden paradise. Sometimes he rests in the hammock of one of the basil leaves, while other times he climbs up the cactus to examine it. In the top photo he's right in the very center of the image. Eventually he vanished just before winter set in.
It is very common for Daddy Long Legs to lose a leg or two as they go through life. Many photos we've taken of them have involved less-than-8 legged creatures.
These next three were of a dady longlegs in our living room, by a light switch.
There's a myth that daddy long legs are dangerous. They are not! They are quite harmless.
Here is one in our back yard, with only seven legs.
Here's one we spotted on our garden supplies.
Here's a video of the daddy longlegs in motion!
