Here is the challenge. Mandarin Chinese is made up of thousands upon thousands of symbols Many of these symbols make about the same sound. So choosing how to spell a new word can be quite challenging. Which of the many symbols that sound like "Co" do you use?
The Coca Cola marketing department was very aware of all the pitfalls involved in choosing the wrong combination. They tried sequence after sequence, aiming to find something that made the right "Coca Cola" sound when spoken and also had a relatively harmless meaning.
