Gray Treefrog - Frogs and Toads in Sutton Massachusetts

There are only two types of tree frogs in Massachusetts - the tiny peeper and the gray treefrog. So if you see a 1-2 inch little frog near trees, it's most likely the gray and not the little under-one-inch peeper. The confusing thing about the gray treefrog - Hyla versicolor - is that it's not necessarily gray! Apparently they change color depending on the weather and their mood and their surroundings. They can go from silvery green to dark brown and all sorts of colors in between. Very cool!

I have been trying for **sixteen years** to get a photo of a grey treefrog - and finally in August 2012 I succeeded! We just happened to be outside at 3am when we spotted a small frog on our porch railing. Apparently these cute little treefrogs only descend from the high branches at night, when they're looking for a lover.

We immediately grabbed a Tupperware and took some photos of it. It was so darling! It was definitely tiny. And jumpy. It was quite eager to climb up out of the container. It was emerald / mossy green, with light brown arms and legs. Each foot had three toes with suction cups. The Gray tree frog has gorgeous, large, dark eyes. Here are our photos! From 3am! :)

Then in August 2013 we had an even better thing happen. A grey treefrog decided that its "sleep spot" was the corner of our deck railing! So at night it would be off wandering - and then in the daytime it'd come back to its post and curl up for a nap. So we had it there all day long. You'll see its cool camoflague ability. These little creatures can change color to match their surrounding.
