Autumn Meadowhawk Dragonflies - Dragonflies in Sutton Massachusetts
There are many types of Meadowhawk dragonflies. They look very similar to each other! This specific one is the Autumn Meadowhawk, or Sympetrum vicinum. This was once called the "Yellow-Legged Meadowhawk" and indeed while most meadowhawks have black legs these tend to have yellow or brown legs. Here is a male autumn meadowhawk we spotted at the pond at Purgatory Chasm. You can tell it's male by its red color.
This next male autumn meadowhawk was on our back porch in September. By the end of September, most other dragonflies have left for the season. If you see a meadowhawk at this time of year, it's most likely an Autumn meadowhawk.
These following ones are of a brown female Autumn Meadowhawk, on our porch in September. It was on the same day as the red one above was taken, in the same location.
