Sutton Massachusetts

Hickory Tussock Caterpillar

The Hickory Tussock Caterpillar is a white / cream color caterpillar with black spots down its back. It also has occasional tufts of white or black fur. Known as Lophocampa caryae, the moth it creates is called either the Hickory Tussock or Hickory Tiger moth. It's found across the US although it seems to avoid the northwest and southeast corners. It's definitely found in Massachusetts and Connecticut. I happened to spot this one in Glastonbury CT on 10/8/11 - I'll update with photos of a Sutton one once I get them! This guy was meandering across a golf course.
