Black Swallowtail Caterpillar - Bugs and Beetles in Sutton Massachusetts

The Black Swallowtail Caterpillar is gorgeous! This vibrant caterpillar has a light green base, with stripes of black running horizontally down its body. These black stripes have bright yellow dots on them. We found these caterpillars merrily enjoying our dill. We were already done eating the dill by that point - it was late in the season - so we gladly left the dill for the caterpillars. Apparently these caterpillars will then turn into coccoons for the winter and emerge as butterflies next spring.

We had them for a week or two in mid-August and then they were gone! They went off to do whatever it is that they do.

The adult butterflies are the large black butterflies you often see.
