Red Admiral Butterflies - Butterflies in Sutton Massachusetts

The Red Admiral butterfly, or Vanessa atalanta, is found not only in North America but also in Asia and Europe. It is a very well known butterfly. It has gorgeous orange coloring, with two large orange stripes on a predominantly dark brown background. It also has white spots out at the outer edges of the wing tips. The antennae are down brown with white spots.

Note how the underside of the wing has a mottled color to it, to provide camoflague when the butterfly has its wings closed.

These photos were taken in mid-May.
