Ladybug - Bugs and Beetles in Sutton Massachusetts

Ladybugs come in a variety of dot patterns, but in general these Coccinellidae family beetles are bright red with black dots on them. In the US they're called ladybugs, but in the UK they're called ladybirds. Quite odd - they definitely aren't birds! Gardeners love ladybugs, because they eat aphids and other garden pests.

Ladybugs even bring good luck! If one lands on you, your wish will come true! The ladybug is the state insect of Massachusetts.

These Ladybugs were photographed in Sutton Massachusetts on a back porch - all on the same day - Oct 31 2009! They came in a great swarm :) This might seem late for bugs to be out, but this time of year is when they're seeking a nice attic to hang out for the winter. You can see in the photos that they came in a range of big spots, little spots, and no spots.
