American Carrion Beetle - Bugs and Beetles in Sutton Massachusetts

American Carrion Beetles eat - as you might guess - carrion and maggots. They do not bother humans though. They provide a vital function, helping to keep our forests and woods clean! Their scientific name is Necrophila americana. They are fairly large, they can grow up to 20mm in size.

The American Carrion Beetle is primarily black, with a tan / yellow "shield" right below its head. That shield has a black mark on it. It has a black head with protruding black antennae. The six legs are black.
