Hairy Woodpecker - Birds in Sutton Massachusetts
Hairy woodpeckers are gorgeous birds with black and white feathers. They look almost exactly like the smaller downy woodpeckers. But where the downy has a tiny beak, the hairy has a beak almost as long as its head. Hairies are also much larger :)
Both downy and hairy woodpeckers are very common in Sutton as long as you put out suet for them to eat. Hairy woodpeckers love to eat suet.
In this image you see the downy, on the left, compared with a hairy woodpecker on the right. Note how the downy has a shorter beak and a smaller size.
