Spotted Salamander

The Spotted Salamander, or Ambystoma maculatum, is one of the few types of salamanders found in Massachusetts. It is found along much of the east coast.

Usually spotted salamanders have LARGE yellow dots in two rows down their bodies. However, we were lucky enough to find a juvenile spotted salamander! These little cuties look like newts and have just a sprinkling of yellow spots on their dark bodies. Usually they hide underground for three years before they are big enough to face the world and start looking for a mate. We found this one in our forested back yard.
