Green Frog - Frogs and Toads in Sutton Massachusetts
There are only five types of frogs found in all of Massachusetts. One of them is the Green Frog, or Rana clamitans. This is the frog that many people think of when they think of "frog". It's green to brown in color, it's about 3" long, and it has a big circular spot behind its eyes. This is the tympanum - in essence a frog ear.
Interstingly, green frogs can turn brown. Some claim this happens due to pollution, while others say it's a natural camoflague effect that the frog will do if it's in a more brown environment. Maybe pollution causes that more brown environment :)
If you ever get confused between a green frog and a bullfrog, here is how to tell them apart. The green frog's "eye ridge" goes straight past his eye and all the way down his back. On a bullfrog this ridge curls around the "ear circle" right behind the eye, but does NOT extend down his back. Even if the frog's head is all you can see, you should be able to see this difference.

The next set of photos was taken in Glastonbury CT in Oct 2011. It's not quite Sutton, but the photos help to more clearly demonstrate what the frog looks like :)
