Bullfrog - Frogs and Toads in Sutton Massachusetts
There are bullfrogs in the pond at Purgatory Chasm! If you want to see a bullfrog in his native habitat, this is a great place to go. Here are some photos I took in September 2009 of the elusive but oh-so-cute bullfrog! Bullfrogs, or Rana catesbeiana, are found pretty much everywhere in the US except in the mountains of the West. They can get up to 6" long.
If you ever get confused between a Green frog and a bullfrog, here is how to tell them apart. The green frog's "eye ridge" goes straight past his eye and all the way down his back. On a bullfrog this ridge curls around the "ear circle" right behind the eye. Even if the frog's head is all you can see, you should be able to see this difference. Below are photos a bullfrog I saw at the TPC course in Cromwell CT. I first thought this was a green frog, because of the ear spot. However, I now realize is a bullfrog because of how the ridge curls around that ear spot.
