American Toad - Frogs and Toads in Sutton Massachusetts
American Toads Bufo americanus are a fairly common toad in Massachusetts. They are found practically everywhere east of the Mississippi River. They are light brown in color with darker brown bumps all down their back. They have a thin light tan line running from their head to their rear. They are about 3 inches long. These photos were all taken in June 2011. The tiny toadlet was found hiding under some leaves near the edge of our house.
This next set was of another toadlet in July 2011, tucked in under the lily leaves.
This one was from September 2009. I thought it was a gray treefrog but learned later that it was just a tiny American Toad. You can tell because of the red spots and because of the lack of toepads on its toes.
