Frogs / Toads in Sutton Massachusetts
Identifying frogs and toads is fairly easy in Sutton. Across the entire state of Massachusetts we only seem to have 2 types of tree frogs, 5 types of regular frogs, and 3 types of toads. Something hoppy should fall into one of those categories! In fact one of the categories - the peeper tree frogs - are so tiny that while everyone hears them hardly anyone sees them. I don't think I've ever seen a peeper, but I can certainly hear them very loudly in the spring!
Frogs and toads are related, but there are a few difference. Frogs are mostly water creatures, while toads can live quite happily on land. Frogs have long back legs and can do huge leaps, while toads have shorter back legs and tend to make short hops. While lots of things will eat frogs, few things eat toads because of the chemicals in their skin.
For those who are curious, the frogs and toads I am missing photos of are: the spring peeper, the pickerel frog, the leopard frog, Fowler's toad, and the Eastern spadefoot. If you have photos of any of these in Sutton, I'd love to hear from you!
